Javier Morales (Ibagué, Colombia, 1993) is a painter, researcher, and a recycler. His chosen subject of study is everyday life by the mountains in the countryside of northern and southern Tolima, a state in south-central Colombia. These rural landscapes become portable, carried within the artist’s personal history and evident in his work. As alternatives to depicting Colombian violence, Morales uses the language of Haitian Voodoo painting and Colombian Primitivism to explore the central theme of memory within his work. Using fantastical imagery and found objects Morales creates pieces that explore the gray area between art, magic, and the soul; what emerges is a body of work in a style he calls Magical Primitivism.
Javier is represented by SGR Gallery.
